Breaking news:UNIBEN On Fire As Students Riot - dhabworld

Reports just reaching us inform that the University of Benin, Benin City, is currently boiling as students of the institution are rioting, blocking roads and causing severe traffic jam.

Though the cause of the riot is still unknown as at the time of compiling this report; however, a source informed that it might have been as a result of a controversy between the governor of the Edo State, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Godwin Osayuki Oshodin.

“The students are rioting this morning because Governor Oshiomhole demolished the house belonging to the former VC of the school,” the source stated.

Another source stated: “Benin is hot this morning, University of Benin students are rioting, blocking roads, burning cars, buses, and lorries; please, do not go towards that area for now.”

It was gathered that as a result of the students’ riot, there was severe traffic gridlock in Benin.

Meanwhile, one of the lecturers of Uniben who spoke on phone with Talkafrica.com, said: “The situation in the University of Benin started yesterday, and escalated today.

“As as I communicating with you on phone, I can confirm to you that there is not just a riot in UNIBEN, but, there is crisis, chaos.

“But, I must tell you that the issue is not between the students of the University and the state government; rather, this is an issue between the University of Benin and the Edo State Government.”

It was gathered that the disagreement between the students and the state government stemmed from the steps taken by Governor Oshiomhole towards the attack of the former vice chancellor.

Another source informed that as at six o’clock this morning the Uniben main gate was already blocked by the student union government and other union activist.

It was gathered that the situation deteriorated when some lecturers of the institution were beaten by some thugs.

It was gathered that the thugs were led by kabaka who is a loyal boy to the Edo state governor.

The same kabaka and his boys led the demolition of the ex vc’s house at GRA, the source stated.

This event led to the burning of comrade bus therefore causing the police force to deploy Over 70 armed men with about 20 polices.
